چکیده

Many motion based simulators have been developed in the last thirty years for many different types of vehicles [1] [2]. In order to make a simulation more realistic, linear accelerations and angular rates are exerted on the pilot by moving the platform on which the mock-up vehicle is located. The purpose of this article is to present a 7 DOFs (vertical, lateral and longitudinal displacements, roll, pitch and yaw angles and steer) motorcycle simulator which has been realized in Pisa, Italy, in the framework of the Esprit project by a consortium composed by industrial partners (Piaggio and Humanware from Italy and HEAD acoustics from Germany) and by academic partners (Scuola Superiore S. Anna from Italy, Halmstad University from Sweden and University of Bochum from Germany). Such project started in 1995 with the aim of developing a two-wheeled motorcycle simulator conceived as a tool for the designer to acquire data on motorcycle handling and stability at the design stage as well as to collect data about rider control behavior implications in motorcycle performances.

Using Simulators for the Assessment of Handling of Motorcycles

Currently only a few motorcycle simulators exist, few or none of which are used during the development of real vehicles. Indeed, most of the existing simulators can some-how reproduce the behavior of a ‘typical’ motorcycle, as opposed to a ‘specific’ motorcycle or configuration. In this work the motorcycle simulator of the University of Padova is employed to assess its possible usage in the dev...

Influence of Alcohol Concentration and Braking Procedure on Motorcylist Brake Reaction Time Using a Motorcycle Riding Simulator

The statistical data published by National Police Agency, Taiwan, indicated that the motorcycle induced the highest accident rate, and drunk driving ranked first among the traffic fatality causes in 2007. The high traffic accident rate was attributed to the alcohol decaying driver reaction and the increase of frequency of using motorcycle in daily life as the car parking space and driving cost ...

Best Training Methods for Teaching Hazard Perception and Responding by Motorcyclists

This project is the first stage of a larger program of research into hazard perception training for motorcycle riders. Future stages of the project will investigate what type of environment can be used to teach hazard perception and responding, for example a motorcycle simulator or a combination of off-road and simulator training. The first report (Haworth, Mulvihill & Symmons, 2005) reviews th...
